From Kuhmo to Kuusamo

I have been taking photos in Kuusamo since 1978 and I started bear photography in Kuhmo in 1987, having previously photographed brown bears in my home municipality of Suomussalmi way back in 1978.

My work as a wildlife photographer has changed direction several times purely by chance.  Nowadays some 600 clients a year from 30 different countries come to Kuikka, our base camp in Kuhmo, to photograph brown bears, wolves, wolverines, golden eagles, owls, other wild birds, and landscapes. We organise similar photo safaris in Kuusamo concentrating on eagles, owls, winter bird residents, the Aurora borealis, or landscapes.

Russian Karelia is also a frequent destination of ours.

No longer solely a nature photographer, I am also a safari leader, guide, trainer and photo hide photography consultant.

I took my first wildlife photos in 1974 and my first bear pictures in 1979. My long career in the sector has not dampened my enthusiasm for photographing predators and other wild subjects – there is just no room for common sense where passions are concerned!
